As a personal branding photographer, I’m often inspired by many things—beautiful light, creativity, and the stories behind the businesses I work with. But one of my most unexpected sources of inspiration? My golden retriever, Sunday. My furry, tail-wagging, cuddle-loving dog has taught me more about life and business than I could have ever imagined.
Sunday is loving, patient, and always happy. She has a natural gift for connecting with everyone she meets, and as it turns out, her approach to life holds some valuable lessons for anyone running a small business. So in celebration of Sunday’s first birthday, whether you’re a business owner looking to build your brand or are simply looking for some inspiration from an unexpected source, here are some life lessons from my dog Sunday that can apply directly to your small business journey.
1. Be Your Own Best Friend | Embrace Your Authenticity
Sunday is unapologetically herself. She doesn’t try to be anything she’s not—she’s kind, loving, and always up for a cuddle. And guess what? People are drawn to her natural warmth and friendliness.
When it rains, the fur on her ears goes crinkly – she looks like she’s had an 80s crimp! It’s her unique little signature and everyone always comments on her cute crimped ears! She embraces her quirks and so should we.
In business, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to be what we think others want us to be. But the real magic happens when you embrace your authentic self. Just like Sunday, people will be drawn to your business when you show up as the real *you.* Whether it’s in your branding, your messaging, or how you present yourself, authenticity is the best way to stand out from the crowd and to draw your people to you.
2. Patience Pays Off | Success Takes Time
Sunday is the queen of patience. She’ll wait by the door for her walk or sit by my feet, quietly waiting for that much-anticipated tummy rub. She knows that good things come to those who wait.
As small business owners, we often want to see results now. But building a strong personal brand, gaining recognition, and earning the trust of your audience takes time. Whether you’re launching a new service or getting in front of the camera for your first branding shoot, remember that good things—just like Sunday’s tummy rubs—come with patience and consistency.
3. Find Joy in the Journey | Stay Positive
If there’s one thing Sunday excels at, it’s finding joy in the little things. Whether she’s on a walk, chasing her tail, or simply lying in a sunny spot, her tail never stops wagging. She’s always smiling, enjoying the moment, and living life to the fullest.
Running a small business can be stressful, and you need to wear so many hats (believe me, I didn’t start a photography business to be an accountant!). It’s easy to get caught up in the churn of deadlines and to-do lists. But Sunday reminds me to find joy in the journey. Celebrate the small wins, enjoy the creative process, and keep that tail wagging (or at least the metaphorical version). Your business will benefit from your positive outlook.
4. The Power of Connection | Build Strong Relationships
Sunday has never met a person she didn’t want to be best friends with. She’s a natural connector, and she invests in every relationship—whether it’s with a neighbour, a fellow dog, or a passing stranger on a walk. She sees the best in everyone and instantly becomes their biggest cheerleader.
In business, relationships are everything. Building trust with your clients, nurturing partnerships, and connecting with your community can be the difference between short-term sales and long-term success. Your clients and community can become your biggest supporters if you build genuine relationships. Just like Sunday greets everyone with a smile and enthusiasm, put effort into building strong, meaningful relationships. When you invest in your relationships, you’ll find that your clients will naturally become your biggest cheerleaders, spreading the word and helping your business grow.
5. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone | Courage to Shine
Sunday’s first encounter with water was… chaotic. She was so excited, splashing around wildly, biting at the water and soaking everyone in sight. But she was also very nervous at first. Yet she didn’t let that stop her—swimming is now her favourite thing, and will dive into any muddy puddle she can find. She embraces challenges with enthusiasm and courage.
For many female entrepreneurs, especially those stepping in front of the camera for the first time, it’s easy to feel nervous or unsure. But just like Sunday steps out of her comfort zone, you can, too. Whether it’s updating your brand images, launching a new service, or showing your face more in your marketing, stepping into the spotlight takes courage—but the rewards are worth it. And who knows, you might even enjoy it!
6. Take Time to Recharge | Self-Care is Key
After a long day of playing, walking, and being the social butterfly that she is, Sunday knows it’s time to rest. She’ll stretch out on her back, fluffy tummy in the air and fall asleep and recharge, ready to face another day of adventures tomorrow.
Small business owners often push themselves to the limit, working long hours and juggling multiple responsibilities. But, like Sunday, you need downtime to restore your energy and creativity. Taking a break without the guilt, stepping outside, or simply unplugging for a bit will help give you the energy and clarity to bring your best to your business.
7. Seek Support | Rest Your Paw and Ask for What You Need
Sunday is the queen of asking for attention. If she wants a cuddle, she’ll gently rest her paw on you until you oblige with tummy rubs, fuss and kisses. It’s a subtle yet effective way of getting what she wants!
In business, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for what you need—whether it’s seeking support from your network, asking clients for feedback, or even reaching out to potential collaborators. Building strong relationships is key to success, and like Sunday, you sometimes need to be bold and let people know what you’re after.
What Sunday Has Taught Me About Business
Who knew that running a small business could have so much in common with life lessons from a golden retriever? Sunday’s joyful, curious, and loving approach to life has given me plenty of insight into what really matters in running a small business. From embracing authenticity and building strong relationships to practising patience and stepping out of your comfort zone.
So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or stuck in a rut, just remember: if Sunday can find happiness in the little things, so can you. Running a business is a journey, and with the right attitude, patience, and a bit of self-care, you’ll create yourself up for a business you love.
And if you ever need a reminder to smile or take a break, just think of Sunday’s wagging tail and her joyful spirit—because sometimes the best business advice comes from a four-legged friend.
